While growing a beard may not be as simple as just letting it grow, taking the time to care for your beard properly will reward you with a stylish, well-kept look.

What more could you want from your facial hair, after all? Before going anywhere near your beard neckline, it’s important to properly prep your beard for shaving.

 

The first step towards any good shave is to shampoo and condition your beard with Bulldog’s 2-in-1 Original Beard Shampoo & Conditioner. Just like the hair on your head, your beard needs to be washed and conditioned to keep it soft and clean.

After your beard dries, comb it out with a wooden beard comb (plastic beard combs will promote static). Comb your beard against the grain, not with it, in order to get the hairs to stand up and make any inconsistencies in length more visible.

Using your clippers, trim your beard to the length you prefer. Having a bigger guard on at first will prevent any unhappy accidents. Remember, you can always go shorter, but you can’t go longer.

After trimming the beard as a whole comes the most important step of figuring out where to shave your neckline. 

How & Where to Shave Your Beard Neckline

Many men get it wrong when trying to figure out where to shave their beard neckline. They either go way too high onto the jaw line, making their beard look too small (or like they have a double chin), or they let it go way too long and wander into neckbeard territory.

Properly trimming your beard neckline is all about striking a happy balance between the two, and there’s an easy trick to find that “Goldilocks” spot.

Take two fingers and place them just above your Adam’s apple and imagine a point just on top of your fingers. From there, draw an imaginary line from behind each ear that ends in a U-shape down to this point. Everything below this imaginary U-shape should be shaved.

From there, you can either shave your neckline just like you would your face, giving your beard a hard stop look, or you can fade your beard.

If you’re not sure how to fade your beard on your own, don’t hesitate to ask your barber for some advice. But the basic concept is like so: set your clippers at half the length of your preferred setting, and trim up from the U-shaped neckline about one inch around the base of the beard. You can fade more from there if you’d like, setting the clippers at half again and trimming half an inch from the bare skin to the middle point of the fade. 

Finishing the Shave

Your beard needs just as much care and attention as the hair on your head, so have your beard comb and some beard oil at the ready.
