What is Sweat & What Does It Do to Your Body?
Do you know what sweat is and why it’s so important for our bodies? From cooling the skin to getting rid of bacteria, learn everything about it in our latest blog. We all sweat, but most of us have no idea what it actually is and why it’s important for our bodies.
Sweat can be composed of a number of things, depending on where it’s coming from: the eccrine glands or the apocrine glands. The former produces the bulk of your sweat and are found primarily in the palms of your hands and soles of your feet and the latter are mostly located in your armpits & groin area. These are the ones that secrete an oily fluid, through hair follicles, which is odourless before bacteria gets involved. Sweat cools the body, but it can cause BO, so, should we be doing everything to stop sweating?
Spoiler alert: no. In this article, we’ll look at the science behind the sweat, as well as products to help promote good hygiene without getting rid of this important function entirely.
Is sweating bad for your skin?
Sweating is an important natural process that cools the body so it’s not something you want to get rid of altogether.
While sweating isn’t bad for your skin in and of itself, you do need to think about hygiene. For example, alongside sweat there is sebum and dead skin cells on the skin, and without proper cleansing, drying sweat and bacterial activity can cause body odour. It is often reported that men exhibit higher sweating rates than women.
This is why we’re excited to offer a range of deodorants that are 98% natural, so your body gets just what it needs without stopping you from actually sweating. Our deodorants are formulated without aluminium (which is found in most antiperspirants), baking soda, synthetic fragrances, alcohol, and parabens. It targets odour-producing bacteria, neutralising the smell for up to 24 hours.
Does oily skin make you sweat more?
There is a struggle during hot weather between defining skin as oily or sweaty. Whilst sweat is produced to cool the skin, humidity could also trigger extra sebum to be produced as well. Oily skin is one of the most common dermatologic concerns and often requires special care due to the amount of sebum produced. Sebum production varies throughout one’s life span, but some individuals will have a higher sebum production than others. This can depend on many factors including gender, where men produce higher sebum levels due to higher testosterone level.
If you struggle with oily skin all year round, a little extra TLC is needed in the summer months or when exercising. Choose a skincare range that has a dedicated formula designed to help maintain healthy oil production and reduce the appearance of shine. Our Oil Control range does just that, with a mix of science and nature bringing you the best possible mix of ingredients for hydrating the skin without weighing it down.
Is it better to use deodorant or antiperspirant?
The fundamental difference between deodorant and antiperspirant is that the former reduces odour caused from sweat and the latter blocks the sweat glands to stop it altogether.
At Bulldog, we believe nature has things right and hygiene is the key. Sweating is an important bodily action and our deodorant is designed to reduce odour, not stop you sweating.
Our deodorants come in a range of 100% natural scents, including rich vetiver and black pepper, invigorating peppermint and eucalyptus, and super fresh lemon and bergamot. Each one is quick-drying and non-staining and made with a prebiotic extracted from chicory root.
