Preparing Your Summer Beard Style
If you’ve updated your wardrobe but not your male grooming kit, it’s time to change things up a little. The increased heat and humidity could leave you feeling a bit claustrophobic, particularly if you’ve got a heavy beard. If you’re thinking of updating your look for summer, we’re on hand with some top tips.
Summer is finally here and even though the heatwave will probably have broken by the time you read this blog (English summertime FTW), your seasonal style has likely changed anyway.
1. Keep Your Beard Clean
It might seem obvious, but your beard cleaning routine needs a bit more effort in the summer months. You’re likely to spend more time outside than you do in autumn and winter which means you are probably coming into contact with more dirt and impurities. Your beard grooming set therefore needs to be stocked up with essential things like beard shampoo and conditioner.
Picnics in the park, hiking through the Great British countryside, or just a kickabout with mates can cause dirt, dust and sweat to build up in your beard, leaving it feeling and smelling somewhat musky. We recommend upping your beard shampoo game during the hot summer months. Try shampooing more regularly in the summer so you can keep your beard looking, feeling, and smelling great.
2. Exfoliate and Moisturise
Even if you don’t have a thick beard and opt for the designer stubble look, the skin beneath any style of facial hair needs to be exfoliated to get rid of any grimy build up. It’s not just the build-up either; the changes in temperature can be bad for the skin. We recommend using a scrub to exfoliate at least once a week when it gets hotter. It’ll leave you feeling fresh-faced and ready for anything.
Now, think of how many times you go from the heat outside to a cool air-conditioned office or restaurant; moisturising will give you the much-needed hydration that is lost from these constant temperature changes. We recommend adding an SPF moisturiser to your men’s skincare kit; use daily and don’t forget to get one that has been formulated specifically for men’s skin. Our Advanced SPF 30 Moisturiser offers nourishment and sun protection.
3. Have a Trim When You Need To
It might be tempting to keep that lengthy beard because it looks so awesome, but comfort can be just as important as style. Longer beards can be a bit more unwieldy in the summer months – beach sand, BBQ smoke, maybe even a struggle to eat that Mr Whippy with a Flake, all of these can be mitigated with a bit of a trim.
Beard grooming sets should always contain a handy pair of scissors or a trimmer that can reduce the length and give you something a bit lighter and cooler for the months when we (sometimes) get sunshine. Also, it gives you a good chance to chop and change your style. Start by trimming just a small amount until you feel a difference in comfort then shape and style accordingly.
4. Or… Start with a Clean Shave
We know you’re passionate about your beard but remember that beards grow quickly. In fact research shows that beards grow quicker in the summer than any other time of year, peaking in July. This is due to the increased production of testosterone in the summer months. So, you could shave off the beard in late spring and potentially have a good foundation for your winter beard by the end of summer.
If you want to feel the wind on your newly-shaved face, we recommend looking into some shaving products made just for men. Our Bamboo Razor is also the perfect partner, with a soothing aloe vera strip for added comfort.
